This Saturday is FREE Comic Book Day

Here lies an illustration of a mermaid in white ink on black paper. Next to it are two 4 by 6 inch illustrations of a cat-dragon, and a pile of business cards.

This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day – and I’m making a guest appearance!

See, the fine folks at Superscript Comics & Games liked having me at the Genghis Con Mini Pop Up Event last month. (Me and a bunch of others, to be fair). They liked us SO much that they invited us to once again showcase at their Free Comic Book Day Event.

So Saturday, August 14, from 3 to 8 pm EDT, I’ll be showcasing my work! And lots of other folks will showcase there, too! (Superscript has been giving creator shout-outs on their Instagram. Go check it out).

Now, this event is SO big that the artists and vendors will be in Bottlehouse Lakewood across the street from Superscript. So keep that in mind if you’re able to be there in person. Also, masks will be available and encouraged, as well as social distancing guidelines.

If you’re a reader who met me through the Genghis Con Pop Up event – or you’re just local to Lakewood/Cleveland – I have a special surprise for you. I’m announcing it in a special edition Thursday email newsletter. So if you’re not on the newsletter yet, be sure to sign up. It’s free and I don’t sell your email to anybody.

As a gentle reminder, Friday is the LAST DAY for my Ko-Fi Clearance Event. Anything not sold will go with me to Free Comic Book Day – but the show is the FINAL day to get the clearance items. Anything marked for clearance will not be at any show after Saturday.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading!

BreeBree Bootique is Now Kitties By Kelci

a black cat stands on hind legs, holding a shield and wielding a laser pointer like a wand. The cat wears a wizard hat embroidered with a ball of yarn rolling around the base. The cat also wears a purple tunic and gold vest. The shield has a dark green cat face and a red gem on the front.

“Whaaaaaa? A name change?” Yes, because BreeBree Bootique is now Kitties By Kelci.

You see, I had a mighty brainstorming session with art buddy and professional cool person Deci Belfry the other day. I’m working with them on something secret (details will come soon), but soon we got to talking about BreeBree Bootique.

And…well, Deci brought up a good point. Which is:

“Dude, if I found out you were drawing cute cats, I’d be ALL OVER that. Because I know you’re the one drawing them.” (Or something like this. I’m paraphrasing here).

I was like, “…You’re right.”

So, Kitties By Kelci will have the same cute kitty art, just with a new name.

The Instagram has the new handle. If you already followed BreeBree Bootique, then Kitties By Kelci will still pop up in your feed. If you haven’t followed yet, now’s a good time to do it.

That said, the RedBubble link has not changed. Lesson learned: once you pick a username on RedBubble, that name becomes the permanent shop name. Even RedBubble says so. Future merchants: LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES.

Maybe Kitties By Kelci will expand to other shop fronts because of that? Who knows?

For now, this is the biggest change I have. All of my other projects are still going smoothly (for the most part). And if you’re a backer of The Legend of Jamie Roberts, volume 1, I’ll have some good news for you tomorrow.

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading!

Throwback Thursday – Phoenix

x-men phoenix marker and ink sketch from 2013

Today’s Throwback Thursday is going to reveal how much of an absolute hipster I am. Because here’s why I drew Phoenix from X-Men:

I’ve never read the comics that featured Phoenix. I only ever saw X-Men 3 for context for who Phoenix is. (And looking back on it, X-Men 3 wasn’t that good).

I drew Phoenix because of the aesthetic.

I wanted to play around with shadows and light on a superhero figure, and this sketch was the result. This was drawn back in 2013, so I’ve improved since then.

But yep – I’m a freakin’ hipster. Only hipsters would draw a character because they looked cool, not because of anything actually pertaining to the character.

So please forgive 2013 me.

Still, I wanted to share this so a) you could learn from my mistake, and b) because I’m actually pretty pleased with how this sketch came out.

If I ever do a redraw of this, I would change the character to someone whom I actually know and like.
