An Open Letter of Anti-Censorship

The following open letter was written as a letter to the editor of a regional newspaper. The newspaper serves an area where the library was under threat of losing funding for carrying LGBTQ+ books like my book, The Legend of Jamie Roberts, volume 1. (For more on that, I wrote a blog post all about it here.)

Dear Editors,

A local resident emailed me recently to let me know there are people in Steubenville trying to cut funding for your local libraries. Why? Because the libraries are carrying books like mine, The Legend of Jamie Roberts. The books I write have LGBTQ+ characters. This is reason enough for some people to try and convince others to cut funding from your local libraries.

That’s unfortunate. Because public libraries are great places to seek stories and information from perspectives besides your own. These folks will try to couch it in “concern for the children.” But it’s not about the children at this point. More on that in a second.

Here’s the thing. Public libraries have books on all kinds of subjects and points of view. Personally, I disagree with JD Vance, Ann Coulter, and Bill O’Reilly. Do I want their books banned? No. Do I want the libraries to have their funding cut because they carry those books? No.

Public libraries are a public good for everyone in every community. No matter your political leanings or religious beliefs. I’m an LGBTQ+ author and former librarian who regularly goes to church on Sunday. Those that read my books, know that.

About those “concerns for the children” – I grew up with people who tried to limit access to stories by and about LGBTQ+ people (limited as they were when I was a child). Did it work? No. I still found those books and read them. All that these “concerns for the children” instilled in me is that the adults in my life tried to control what I read and could access. Once I got to read these books, that made me question the legitimacy of their authority more than anything else. Why would they try to keep these books out of my hands? Why were they trying to dictate what I could read? They can try to hide behind “concerns for the children” all they want. The real reason is because they want to control what you know and learn, and keep you afraid of certain, specific people.

Young people should be curious and engaged in their world. That’s what books foster. It’s better to be curious and engaged than blindly obedient. If people want their kids to grow and thrive, encourage them to engage with their curiosity and to read broadly.

I am firmly against censorship, no matter if it manifests as explicit book banning or trying to cut funding for public libraries.

I don’t just write this to voice my thoughts, though. I also write this to encourage your readers to start attending library board meetings, and write letters to library board members and the local board of education. Talk to friends and encourage them to do the same.

Public libraries are shaped by the input of their readers and their local community. So what kind of community is Steubenville trying to form?

That’s all for now. Thank you for your support.

Preparing for KickStarter Fulfillment and Genghis Con

For the next week and a half, I am preparing for KickStarter fulfillment AND Genghis Con Cleveland.

KICKSTARTER FULFILLMENT

Backer surveys didn’t go out on Monday because I took some time off (and started a new job yesterday).

Instead, they are sending out before the end of today. So keep an eye on your inboxes.

In other updates:

  • the files for the book have been sent off to the printer. I’m waiting on the proof to come back.
  • I will tally up the orders by the end of today to determine how many zines, mini-prints etc need printed.
  • the webcomic site for The Legend of Jamie Roberts is going dormant for a couple of weeks. Regular updates will resume Dec 3 – when we start posting the Basho and Norsa short comic we unlocked!

Full disclosure: I will open up for commissions for the holiday season. But KickStarter backers get top priority/billing since you claimed the spots first.

I should have new updates for you within the next week. Stay tuned! (And if you need more comics in your inbox, sign up for my email newsletter if you’re not on there already.)

GENGHIS CON CLEVELAND

November 30, find me at Genghis Con Cleveland!

Just like last year, this year’s event is at the Pivot Center for the Arts. The show runs from 11 am to 5 pm, featuring tons of indie comics (not just my own). Plus there are a handful of panels happening!

small press/independent comic con Genghis Con, with zines! Comics! Art! And it's FREE to attend! Thus declare crows wearing party hats with their wings on fire. Genghis Con is Sunday, November 30th 2025, 11 am to 5 pm, at the Pivot Center for Art, Dance, and Expression

This year I want to be sure I bring extra copies of my books, because last year I sold out of some titles before the end of the day. It’s a good problem to have! But I want to be sure I have plenty for the new readers to get their hands on.

Full disclosure: The Legend of Jamie Roberts, volume 3 will NOT be ready in time for Genghis Con Cleveland. Sorry, Cleveland peeps. But if you’re interested in getting a copy, let me know.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for more updates!

Thank you for reading.

Roxie (for the Zebra Youth Coalition)

trans girl with a rainbow mohawk painted in watercolor

This is Roxie, a transgender roller derby girl and star of the webcomics Validation and ROXIE. I painted this as part of a series of watercolor paintings as a fundraiser for the Zebra Youth Coalition in Orlando, Florida.

I want to say I painted this with Qor watercolors? It’s actually been so long since I painted it that I forgot!

The original paintings have since sold out. If you see this out in the wild, it’s most likely a print.

I wanted to share this because here in Toledo, OH, it’s PRIDE month! To celebrate, I’m sharing Pride-related illustrations each week during August.

Stay tuned for more Pride art! Or, to get sneak peeks ahead of time, sign up for my email newsletter (it’s free, spam-free, and I don’t sell your email to anybody).

That’s all for now. Thank you for reading!

I’m Going MIA

I’m going to be MIA and away from the keyboard from July 14 to July 20 or 21. Family is going to be visiting.

I WILL, however, be at the Toledo Comic Arts Festival this Saturday!

The event is at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s Main Branch in downtown Toledo, from 10 am to 4 or 5 pm. I will also be participating in a quick draw event at 3, competing against other artists to see *who can be the best*!

If you can make it to Toledo Comic Arts Fest, I hope to see you there! If not, I’ll be back online after the 20th.

Webcomics and newsletter updates will continue as normal, though!

That’s all for now. Thank you for your understanding!

I Made A Comic About Lake Erie and the Toxic Algae Blooms

I made a comic about Lake Erie and the toxic algae blooms! You can read it now, freely, on Crucial Comix and The Revelator.

This is my first nonfiction comic publication, aside from a 3-page explainer for a Columbus, OH zine about the 3 Sisters crop arrangement (that’s coming later). I had not made a science comic like this before, and I’m glad I accepted the challenge!

On Crucial Comix, it’s, “Lake Erie Was Declared Dead. Now We’re Fighting For Its Life.” On The Revelator (a publication of The Center for Biological Diversity), it’s, “In Ohio, Facing A Future Without Clean Water.”

Here’s a sneak peek of it:

part 1 of my lake erie comic.
part 2 of my comic about Lake Erie

To read the rest of the comic, head to Crucial Comix or The Revelator. Links are above the art.

I want to make more comics like this. The scientists who got me in touch with the biologists for this are expressing interest in working with me again on a separate project. We’ll see who likes the pitch and where we can go with it!

During the making of this comic, I learned *way too much* about Lake Erie. So if you have questions, leave them in the comments and let me know.

That’s all for now. Thanks for reading!
