Coming this Friday to my email newsletter…

It’s Vanita and the Demon King!

I have made comics exclusively for newsletter subscribers before. And I think it’s time I bring that back.

This time, we’re jumping to one year after the events of The Case of the Wendigo. (You can catch up on that story for free online – or get the graphic novel with remastered pages and bonus content.)

The story goes that 1000 years ago, a Demon King threatened humanity itself – and the only one brave enough to stand against him was the hero of mankind, Richard. Richard punched the Demon King so hard that the demon vanished!

Cut to 1000 years later, and Vanita is jogging at the park when she sees the Demon King himself passed out in the bushes!

Thus begins this silly slice-of-life story about a demon passing out on the couch of a trans woman.

So This Story is Happening?

Yes! Thanks to the lovely backers of the Crowdfundr campaign, they helped cover the basic set-up costs and the production of the first few pages of the comic!

The comic is all set to launch this Friday, March 17 (yep, St. Patrick’s day).

The Email Newsletter is BACK!

The email newsletter is back, and I’m happy to introduce some new things to it!

I had put the newsletter on hiatus for a few weeks because of a fatal design flaw in MailChimp’s system. This design flaw deleted all of my subscribers, with no way of putting them back on the list.

So I deleted my MailChimp account, and started shopping around.

It took a little while to find a good substitute – for a hot minute I was afraid MailChimp had monopolized the free email client market.

But I found two services: Moosend and MailerLite.

I tried to make Moosend work, but it kept rejecting every email I tried to use. See, when you send emails, you need to specify who the sender is. And Moosend kept rejecting every. Dang. Email. That I wanted to use.

“This email is from a free client.” “This email is invalid.” Bleh bleh bleh.

So I didn’t want to dick around with them.

After a little more research, I found MailerLite.

And, for what I need it for, MailerLite has been working marvelously.

It’s a bit of a curve for me to get used to: it has different terminology and layouts than MailChimp. And I had been using MailChimp for like 3 years. So it’s still a process to unlearn MailChimp’s clunky-ass design and use MailerLite.

That said, now that I’m getting the hang of MailerLite, it’s smoother to handle than MailChimp. I also have zero fear of accidentally deleting all of my subscribers. And that’s worth everything right now.

Now that the email newsletter is back, I can bring in some new ideas: like exclusive offers for folks I meet at specific events, and even a Patreon-only newsletter.

That said, here’s the thing:

If you were on my email list before, odds are high that you got deleted. My back-up files were very limited. Not everyone was able to get back on.

So.

If you would like to get email updates from me once a week, you can re-sign up at this link.

If you’d rather not, that’s ok too. There’s still Facebook, Instagram, Patreon, and this blog.

(But newsletter subscribers get the news first when I launch KickStarter campaigns. Plus I make announcements of my convention appearances on the newsletter.)

But whatever choice you make is the right one.

Bringing Blog Posts Back!

Alright! I’m back from RathaCon in Athens, OH. Not a whole lot of sales were made, but lots of folks signed up for the email newsletter and, by the sounds of it, I got a comic shop in the area interested in consigning my books. Plus I got to meet an indie filmmaker looking for pitches (I’ll get to him in the next post), and a T-shirt designer who REALLY liked my Dia de la Gata card design and wanted to get that on a shirt. Going Creative Full-Time: A Game Plan

It’s time for strategy.

So due to circumstances outside of my control, I’ll be leaving my day job (or, if you prefer, my day job will leave me) by February 23rd. However, it’s looking like it may happen sooner than that, but I digress.

Now, I COULD get another day-job… But the day jobs around me that are available are full-time (leaving me no time for comics) OR part-time, minimum wage jobs. My losing my current day job is just a bit painful because it was part-time and paid higher than minimum wage, a rarity in today’s world.

However, considering how well my making comics was doing, to the point where the day job was getting IN THE WAY… I thought, “Screw it. Let’s make comics and art-making a full-time gig!”

Bringing Review Day Tuesdays Back!

It’s been a while since I’ve done Review Day Tuesdays, my YouTube video series where I review new comics, books, and other works. I had put it on hiatus back in the tail end of June this year, because my schedule was getting too bananas to update it weekly.

Now I’m getting to a point where I can revive the series, but there will be one big change.

After I get done with a few more videos for the Poetry for Troubled Times series, I’ll be bringing back Review Day Tuesdays, to update every other week.

Why?

Not only have I been reading new comics lately, but I’ve also taken up the job of being head librarian at my local Universalist Unitarian Church. The library at the church has a lot of books dealing with LGBT issues, sociology, gender, and world religions, and that’s not even touching on the biography section or the multiple shelves of poetry.

One book in particular is one I want to discuss – the book pictured at the top of this post.

I’m looking forward to this one especially because of some reasons pointed out in this Hannah Wilton video about feminism and masculinity. The biggest reason is that while feminism has made great strides for women’s rights and roles, the roles of men haven’t been discussed much, and for feminism to be effective for everyone, that MUST be discussed.

Also! There’s one book I found in the library collection, called “Against the Tide.” It’s a book about men in the feminist movement. That book has a chapter talking about how the Equal Rights Act can benefit men as well as women, and I will actually read that chapter for YouTube at some point in the next few months, because it has portions in it that few people discuss even today.

I can’t wait to share these books with you, and the new comics I’ve come across, including Tank Girl’s newest run, “GOLD,” and “Once Our Land,” an 1830s post-apocalyptic comic that takes place in Germany.

Books, and the discussions of their ideas, are more important now than ever, and I hope you’ll join me when the series gets fully revived. I’ll announce a more specific date on my email newsletter.
